Restriction plans on sugary & fatty foods in Scotland

The Scottish government outlined plans for strict restrictions on the sale, advertising und promotion of sugary and fatty foods. The plans will be set out in detail autumn 2018.

Main aspects:

  • Cutting calories and portion sizes at fast-food outlets
  • Restricting the sales of multi-buy offers for foods that are high in fat, sugar or salt
  • Restricting and consulting sales of energy drinks to under 16 year-olds
  • Outlawing free samples and use of coupons for risky foods
  • Restricting displays at checkout or shopfront  that promote high risk foods

UK ministers said: “Relying solely on individual action is not always sufficient. We are all susceptible to temptation, but children are especially impressionable. We need to make it easier for us all to make positive dietary choices.”

The proposals of the Scottish government  were welcomed by  Food Standards Scotland (the governments safety agency) and health charities. The Scottish Retail Consortium said, amongst other things, that any labelling changes need to be applied consistently across the UK.
