In 2015 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ruled artificial trans fats, a modified form of vegetable oil, unsafe to eat. Food producers have had three years to phase out the ingredient. From 18 June 2018 its officially banned.
Artificial trans fats are produced in an industrial process that changes the chemical structure of vegetable oil. Scientist found out that this leads the human body to produce more bad cholesterol and can cause other possible problems. The ingredient was used in e.g. popcorn, frozen pizza or coffee creamer.
The ingredients replacing the trans fats are the challenge now for regulators and public health advocates.
